to land at Orly airport, in Paris! Today’s video features a two-in-one 
experience. On the one hand, I’ll show you an easy and simple route to 
transfer from Orly Airport to Gare du Nord, which can also be used to reach Charles de Gaulle, 
the other key airport in Paris. At the same time, I’ll showcase the Orlyval, an automated 
people mover that effortlessly connects Orly Airport to the train at Antony, and the 
connecting RER a hybrid between a commuter train and an urban metro, from there 
to the center of Paris. Come along! After arriving, disembarking, 
and collecting our luggage, we find ourselves at one of Orly’s concourses. 
It’s easy to reach the Orlyval with plenty of signs to help navigate this busy airport. We quickly arrive at the Orlyval atrium,  where there are several ticket machines 
available. Let me explain how to purchase a ticket. These can be paid using 
banknotes, coins, or credit or debit cards. A single ticket from here to the center of Paris 
costs 14.50. If you are going all the way to Charles de Gaulle airport, the price is 25.30. From the atrium, we shall take the left hallway. The one on the right takes us to the platform 
of the Orlyval to the airport’s terminal 4. I could have taken the train that was about to 
depart, but I want to show you this stop. Besides, the service is quite frequent, with a 
train arriving every 5 to 7 minutes, every day, from 6 AM to 11:35 PM.
From this station, serving terminals 1, 2, and 3 to Antony, is a distance of 6250m 
which the vehicle takes 6 minutes to cover at a maximum speed of 70km/h. The opportunity to have a front view of the track is highly appreciated! Soon we depart, and you may have noticed the green signal. Although this is an automated 
vehicle that operates independently, the system is equipped with provisions for manual driving 
if needed. That’s why there are light signals. How did the Orlyval come into existence? Until 
the 1980s, access to Orly Airport was primarily by car. Public transportation options were 
inadequate, leading most passengers to choose cars and taxis to reach the airport, which resulted 
in increasing congestion. In the early 1980s, the French government began searching for alternatives 
and selected the VAL (Vehicule Automatique Leger), or Light Automated Vehicle in English. 
This transport solution was developed by Matra, a French company now part of Siemens Mobility, 
that had been in service in Lille since 1983. Finally, On October 2, 1991, the 
Orlyval began its commercial service. In technical terms, the vehicles are 
electric and powered by a third rail supplying 750V continuous current. Unlike 
traditional trains, they are equipped with rubber tires separated by 1620 mm. Each set of 
vehicles consists of two 13-meter-long cars, capable of transporting 240 passengers per trip.
With the recent opening of Paris Metro’s Line 14, which provides direct access to the center 
of Paris, the future of the Orlyval is now in question. Several options are being 
considered, ranging from its demolition to an extension that would serve nearby villages. 
In the meantime, until a decision is made, the Orlyval continues to operate as it has for the 
past 33 years, connecting Orly Airport to Antony in connection with Line B of the RER. After a swift six-minute journey,  we arrive at Antony. Here we transfer to 
the RER station to get our train to Paris. To get from the Orlyval station to the RER, 
it’s just a short two-minute walk through underground passages. While we get there and 
wait for the train, let’s explore the history of this combination of train and subway. The 
RER (Reseau Express Regional) has its origins in plans from the late 1930s aimed at connecting 
the suburban areas east and west of Paris with a train line that would cross the city, as opposed 
to relying solely on the existing metro system. However, the first underground station of what was 
initially called the Metro Regional did not open until 1961. Construction continued, and in 1977, 
the first east-west connection was inaugurated, at which point the name RER was adopted. Over 
the years, the system has expanded significantly, and today it consists of five lines covering 
602 kilometers, of which 76.5 kilometers are underground, with a total of 257 stops.
Over the past 50 years, various train classes have operated in the system. Although 
all the lines pass through Paris underground, these trains are considered regular trains 
that meet mainline train standards. This is in contrast to subway trains, which are built 
according to a different set of specifications. With our trip on the RER to the Gare du Nord 
underway, let me ask you if these historical and technical pieces of information are
